The Soundtrack of the Rocking Barber

Barbershops have always had a soundtrack.
Sometimes it’s quiet conversation, sometimes the hum of clippers, and sometimes it’s music playing in the background while the work gets done.
For me, that music has always been rock ’n’ roll, rockabilly, and rhythm & blues from the 1950s — the same era that gave the world some of the greatest men’s hairstyles ever created.
It’s the sound of pompadours, leather jackets, motorbikes and rebellion. In other words, the sound of rock ’n’ roll culture.
Recently I started putting together a series of Spotify playlists featuring some of my favourite tracks from that era. Six playlists so far, each packed with the kind of music that makes you want to turn the volume up and drive a little further down the road.
The Music Behind the Style
The connection between rock ’n’ roll music and classic barbering runs deeper than most people realise.
When Elvis Presley exploded onto the scene in the 1950s, he wasn’t just introducing a new sound. He was introducing a look. The pompadour hairstyle became as iconic as the music itself — bold, confident, and unmistakably different from the neat styles that came before it.
Rock ’n’ roll didn’t just change music. It changed how men wore their hair.
That spirit still shows up in the barber chair today.
Many of the classic cuts I enjoy creating — pompadours, quiffs, clean tapers — come straight out of that era. The music and the style grew up together.
Six Playlists of Proper Rock ’n’ Roll
The playlists I’ve created aren’t carefully curated museum pieces. They’re simply collections of great records from the period — songs that still sound fantastic decades later.
You’ll find:
• Driving rockabilly rhythms• Early rock ’n’ roll classics• Raw rhythm & blues recordings that helped start it all
Some tracks are famous. Others are deep cuts that deserve to be heard more often.
What they all share is energy, character, and a certain timeless cool.
Perfect listening for the gym, the garage, the open road, or the barber chair.
Music, The Rocking Barber Haircuts and Culture
One of the things I love about barbering is that it sits right in the middle of culture.
A haircut isn’t just hair. It reflects the music people listen to, the clothes they wear, and the kind of identity they want to project.
The rock ’n’ roll era understood this instinctively. The music had attitude, and the hairstyles followed suit.
That same spirit still resonates today, whether someone is wearing a full pompadour or simply a well-cut taper with a bit of character.
Listen to the Playlists
If you enjoy 1950s rock ’n’ roll, rockabilly and rhythm & blues, you might enjoy these playlists.
They’re a small window into the music that continues to inspire the style and atmosphere behind The Rocking Barber.
Turn them on while you’re driving, training, working in the garage, or just relaxing with a good record.
Rock ’n’ roll still sounds pretty good.
